The initial half kilometre of "Chase the Coyote"  in September, was a bit of a hill.  Anyone still feeling the chill of the misty breezy morning was warmed within minutes.  The trail isn't overly wide at that point either, with tree roots and man made steps (to hold the trail during rains) to occupy the eyes and awareness as we tackle the grade en mass.  The horde of eager participants begins to sort as the uber fit hill enthusiasts tear by, heading for the front of the pack. Too bad we didn't all know who was who a few minutes ago. 

We sort ourselves out without anyone getting run over.  It is a friendly bunch after all.  Participants come in all shapes and sizes, from every stage of life.  A woman zooms past who must be about 10 years older than me. (Easy Julie, this possibly isn't her first event.  She looks incredibly fit.). Should I try to keep up with her? My inner guiding voice reminds me - run your own race at your own pace. 

I pass a 10(ish) year old girl who is walking.  "You okay?"  "Yeah."  I pass a couple of twenty something gals who have decided to walk awhile, and I'm on my own.  I'm not the fastest. I'm not the slowest.  This is my race.  This is my race speed. It works for me. 

This morning I swam. Some of my fellow swimmers are faster than me. Some are slower.
